A Most Wonderful Feeling

If you are considering writing your own children’s book(s), if they are inside you and bursting to come out, I heartily recommend that you free them and share them with the world. For me, writing children’s books is a joyous adventure. I learn a lot about the process and about myself along the way. I’ve written five fully illustrated children’s books for the bed time stories/read-to-me and early reader ages and have other stories in mind.

A special perk for children’s book writers is that every once in a while magic can occur. I was at a BBQ yesterday with quite a few young children who I’d never met. The host, knowing there would be a lot of children at the BBQ laid out four of his grandchildren’s favorite books. It turns out that I’d written two of them. That was a wonderful feeling. Then one of the parents who had apparently bought my children’s books for her children told her five year old son that the person who had written them was at the BBQ and asked if he’d like to meet me. I saw this transpire out of the corner of my eye and watched a beaming smile light up his face as he nodded enthusiastically. I had a wonderful conversation with him.

As I spoke to her son, she began telling other parents how much she and her children loved them. Someone mentioned that the author who wrote them was at the party, and the next thing I knew parents were reading them, passing them around, reading them, and telling me how much they enjoyed them. Since I didn’t have any of my books with me, I offered to mail some with the children’s names in them and notes to them, and they began giving their names and addresses to me. It was a most wonderful feeling indeed.

With Love,
